    ABOUT

“Latvian Decor” continues the tradition of my parents’ Latvian shop “J. Strautiņš Bookshop” which was on 5th Floor, in the Causeway of 306 Little Collins Street in Melbourne, Australia, from 1954-1984.

Latvian Decor is a niche market which now includes those Latvians who grew up not speaking the language and those with one parent Latvian and have a hankering to own something Latvian because the heritage is so dear to them.

Originally my parents’ shop catered to the Baltic immigrants who arrived in Australia after WW2 as Displaced Persons, who were nostalgic for their culture. My parents stocked Latvian books, cards, cushion covers, woven items, artwork, leatherwork as album covers, wallets and notebook holders, wooden wall plates and candlesticks, ceramics, silver jewellry and amber.

Below is a photo of the first craft market my parents took part in Melbourne in the Brunswick Town Hall. You can see my mother in national costume as well as dressing me in a Nica costume.
